How to train at home the right way

Fitness begins at home and you can lose weight, pack muscle, or simply get toned at home without even joining your local gym. But what do you need to know to make it happen?

We're now almost 6 months into the new year and the new year's resolutions are now far away. But summer is fast approaching, it's time to take out your beach shape and as you already know, at Blackburn Athletics, we train to look good naked!

Here are a few basic tips about how to train efficiently and safely from the comfort of your own home:


Training at home alone can be difficult for some people. You will not have the same motivation when you're not surrounded by like-minded people and trainers. If you need extreme motivation, do not hesitate to contact us directly through our Facebook page or by phone.

It can easily become boring if you always perform the same set of exercises which is why it is important to vary the intensity and difficulty of each training, and also to change the routine as often as needed so you always have something to look forward to.

Apart from adding some variety to your workout routine, you can also set some clear goals with a picture of the body you would like to have a few weeks or months from now. This way, you will stay motivated and will have something to focus on. Getting the help and support of your partner and family members or friends is also important.

Ideal Length

There is not ideal duration for each session but try to exercise for at least half an hour each time. Training 3 times every week or more is the frequency you should aim for to get results.

Don't overtrain either: 1 hour or 1 hour and a half are way enough. And if you haven't exercised for a long time, you should start slowly instead of training too hard and potentially getting injured or not being able to move for days.


You can train without any equipment: pushups, abs… don't require anything.You can buy a yoga mat and some dumb bells for a few dollars. Throw a stability ball into the mix too. If you want to build a real home gym, you will need more weights, a workout bench, some cardiovascular equipment, and possibly a sound system and some mirrors.


Take at least ten minutes to warm up and cool down properly. Start slowly and progressively increase the level of activity. Listen to your body and stop if you feel unwell. Drink plenty of water and wear adequate clothing, especially sport shoes.
